A recent 'plein air' watercolor painting from Los Gigantes, Tenerife.
At their highest point, the Los Gigantes cliffs are a sheer 800 m, or 200 stories tall. The surreal landscape transitions abruptly between aspects: Bludgeoning rock-filled waves. Grey-purple sand. Gonna-stub-that-F-ing-toe deposits of teetering sea smoothed black stones. High-rise high wall of earth and rock crosscut with careening vertical faults and gradated horizontal ridges.
Of course, beach goers like myself looked out of place in that natural grandeur, nearly hostile it its surreal beauty. The topography seemed like that of a planet only recently sucked together from space dust and still violently volcanic, unstable, and only fractionally infested with proto-hymanoid farting squids. Either that, or an infirmly old planet fled by the self-preserving subset of a previous race of creatures as it fell into a state of inhabitable decay rendering it a terrifying collage of only its most inconvenient elements.
Sunset clipped through the crests of the waves and cast an incandescent departing gaze on the dramatic sienna-gold cliffs, ancient, endurant.
