A recent 'plein air' watercolor painting from Los Gigantes, Tenerife.
At their highest point, the Los Gigantes cliffs are a sheer 800 m, or 200 stories tall. The surreal landscape transitions abruptly between aspects: Bludgeoning rock-filled waves. Grey-purple sand. Gonna-stub-that-F-ing-toe deposits of teetering sea smoothed black stones. High-rise high wall of earth and rock crosscut with careening vertical faults and gradated horizontal ridges. Of course, beach goers like myself looked out of place in that natural grandeur, nearly hostile it its surreal beauty. The topography seemed like that of a planet only recently sucked together from space dust and still violently volcanic, unstable, and only fractionally infested with proto-hymanoid farting squids. Either that, or an infirmly old planet fled by the self-preserving subset of a previous race of creatures as it fell into a state of inhabitable decay rendering it a terrifying collage of only its most inconvenient elements. Sunset clipped through the crests of the waves and cast an incandescent departing gaze on the dramatic sienna-gold cliffs, ancient, endurant. If you walk through the garden
Nov 20 - Dec 13, 2015 8.3"x11.7" $100 This painting is something I have been imagining painting for awhile and finally got around to making over the last month. The title is taken from the Tom Waits song "Way Down in the Hole" which starts with "When you walk through the garden..." You might recognize it from The Wire. So this painting is my version of Eden-- the familiar inner struggle as a landscape. One figure turns left, the other figure turns right, meeting up with an old friend. "The Wall" (In progress) Oil on paper 8.3"x11.7" A few others: Going to finish 3 of the larger size by the end of the week, check back then!
I'm in Barcelona for the next month! I'm hoping to keep up plein air painting, here is one of a plaza nearby. I started with a pencil sketch and then came back the next day to add the watercolors. I hoped to share the peaceful late fall, late afternoon atmosphere.
