OIL PAINTING

Click images to enlarge: Happiest with the first one. The lightbulb painting might have some potential. The kitchen paintings seem to be going through an awkward adolescent stage and are really testing my patience. Updated progress slideshows of the kitchen paintings: Started a new painting tonight that seems to be coming together rather quickly. After working on it for less than 2 hrs I think it is about 80% done. This happens to me very rarely. Excited! Factors that may have worked to my advantage: strong directional light source, objects of personal interest, energy drink I had beforehand. Now that I think about it, the works I have been struggling with are all interiors. Maybe I'll put those aside for now and allow myself to concentrate on still lifes again.
I was excited about the start of this painting but am having trouble deciding how to resolve the right side. I am painting this while standing just outside the door to our kitchen, and the doorframe completely blocks my view to the right of the third window. This doorframe is very well lit and about 5 inches from my face. I think including it in the painting successfully would be extremely difficult, so I may try to alter my perspective (step to the left) so that it is not longer dominating my view.
An update of the kitchen painting and a new still life. I am trying to enjoy the process rather than stressing over the final product. I am content with the Light Bulb painting at the moment. I also did the crappy painting below. Not worth continuing, but I'm trying not to agonize over it as time wasted. There are going to be false starts. Looking forward to painting something else over it. Recent Inspiration: -Great article about 'hackers' and painters. Thanks for the tip, Dan! -Awesome Rob Ryan interview reminded me not to take myself too seriously and to think of painting like a child--it's just playtime. Another attempt at finishing a painting in a couple hours. An improvement I think from the last attempt, but still a struggle. The form of this particular plate seemed impossible to capture.
Still haven't used oils--changes from the last state were made using colored pencil painted over with clear acrylic medium/gesso. Not sure if it will work out or if the layers will peal. I know I'm procrastinating by not starting in oils and definitely will next time I work on this one.
Tomorrow I am going to Lake Anna for a few hours and hope to finish a landscape painting while there. Here is the first state of the still life I started yesterday. Rather than going in with oil washes I decided to experiment with using chalk pastels and clear medium to lay in some basic colors. The current layer of jarring yellow on the shell and flowers will hopefully serve as a nice base for the purple tones I anticipate layering over the yellow in the next state.
Today I started the underpainting for a 12x12" still life on masonite using layers of charcoal blended with clear gesso and white gesso. I will begin with washes of oil tomorrow.
